During a recent interview with Eurogamer, Yoshinori Kitase responded to whether or not Final Fantasy would ever release on PC.
Kitase started by saying, “Let’s not forget, when we developed the Final Fantasy 13 series, all three titles, at the early stages of development we were working on PC.”“Then we had to port it to the consoles. As far as the technology is concerned, it would have been possible for us to make a PC version”.
He further went to explain,“But we see potential in [a PC port] and there are lots of regions and countries where PC is very strong. So in terms of our hope of being able to deliver our games to every single country in the world and to as many gamers as possible, yes, we would definitely be interested in pursuing that route in the future.”
Beyond Kitase’s recent interview Square Enix’s chief technology officer Yoshihisa Hashimoto said that if a PC version were to be released it would” require an expensive machine to run”. Hashimoto further went on saying that the company was waiting to gauge audience demand before making a decision on a PC release.
In a past interview with Famitsu magazine Nomura said the likeliness of a PC port ” depends on the demand”. ” but if we get a lot of people in the future who want to play it with full specs, I think we can discuss supporting that.”
With Final Fantasy XV is being developed from DirectX 11 (PC based) the process of porting the game to PC’s would be quite easy and without much hassle.
As for the demand,Square is starting to see it is there. With Final Fantasy 7 having already topped Steams Top 10 and with Final Fantasy 7 and 8 having a PC sale this weekend they will no doubt feel the demand more than ever.
