Pokémon Nuzlocke Day 1…

Awhile ago I read about the Pokemon Nuzlocke Challenge and it interested me.  Today I finally got around to starting this adventure of Pokemon on Hard Mode.  For those of you who dont know the rules to this, there are only two basic rules:

1) You may only catch ONE pokemon per area ( Route 2, Route 20, Veridian Forest, etc ) and it MUST be the first Pokemon you encounter in the zone

2) When your pokemon is fainted/knocked out you must release it or permanently store it in a box in the  PC at the pokemon center.  This essentially ”kills” the pokemon because it died in battle.

There are other various optional rules you can go by, but they differ depending on what you want to go with for your challenge.  I wont be able to update the journal entries everyday but when I get a decent amount done I’ll throw a new one up to be read. The first goal was to find which game I wanted to play, because looking at FAQs is considered cheating so that left me with already known games ( Red/Yellow/Gold and their enhanced versions ) and I wanted it to be mobile on my tablet so I could play it at work, or when my desktop is being used for other games or television.  There doesn’t seem to be any DS emulators out there for Android so that removed Heart Gold/Soul Silver from the decision.  In the end, I opted for Fire Red because the first generation has a nostalgic fix on me.

Onto the game…

One of my IRC buddies agreed to partake in the challenge with me as well, and since I was playing Fire Red, he’s doing Leaf Green.  Since your extremely limited to you party choice I’m using the emulator’s Turbo option for a good chunk of the game to help  level up my  party in less time before going onto a new area, else this challenge would take forever.  One of the optional rules we are playing by at that we have to nickname all of our Ppokémon, thus forming a bond with them and having more feelings for them then if we just left them with a default name ( silly, right? ).  I always loved Charmander so I went ahead and took him as my first, nicknaming him Charmy.

The start of the game as you all know is pretty basic, beat your rival, deliver the package and then get forced into doing an old man’s dream because he’s too lazy to do it.  I got some Pokeballs and was eager to start the challenge.  The first fucking Pokémon I encountered on Route 2 was a Pidgey ( at least it’s not a Rattata ) and quickly weakened, and capture it naming it Pigoo.  Spent some time leveling him up to match Charmy’s level and headed into Viridian Forest where I was hoping to run across a Weedle cause nobody like Butterfree.

Upon entering the forest, I really… really didn’t want a Caterpie and thankfully… I found myself a weedle which I quickly named Wenis

 

Regardless to say, I did a little bit of farming inside the forest getting ready to pound Brock into the ground with his own Pokémon.  Wenis already turned into a Beedrill, Charmy was level 14, and Pigoo got up to 17 and then…. my tablet reset itself.  Realizing I only have a single state save from just before I captured Wenis at level 3… I was a little broken.  I haven’t lost these friends of mine in battle and had to release them, but I lost them completely due to my forgetting to save on a ROM…

I walked away from the device for awhile, reloaded the save and got Wenis back and repeated everything again I’ve mentioned above ( heh… Wenis used HARDEN ) and beat up Brock to get my first Gym Badge.  With my flashy new BOULDERBADGE in my pocket, I decided to take a trip on Route3 and fight some trainers and see what options I had to extend my party.  I found myself at the entrance to Mt. Moon and decided it was time to put my journey on hold.  The good news about today?  No Pokémon died so I haven’t lost any of my friends
