Nintendo Direct 4/17/13 – Surprises Unfold!

Today Nintendo Direct was focused mainly on the 3DS, though a few Wii U related content was revealed. It was also filled with some unexpected announcements so let’s get down to it.

 

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team

 

This is the latest entry in the Mario and Luigi RPG series. In the game Princess Peach has gotten kidnapped into the Dream World and it is up to Mario and Luigi(while he sleeps) to save the day. We got a release date set for August 13, 2013.

 

Mario Golf: World Tour

 

The Latest Mario Golf game will feature multiplayer and just like Mario Kart 7 it will use Communities to allow you to play with friends and other players around the world. To add to the fun you can adjust the settings in multiplayer matches like removing special shots, compete in short courses or allow only the use of one character. No release date as of yet but it is coming sometime this Summer.

Mario Party 3DS

 

The newest installment of the Mario Party franchise is coming to the 3DS this Winter. It will feature 7 boards with each having their own unique rules. In one board you can collect boosts and be able to get a huge lead or make a comeback by moving farther through the board. In another board, you could be set back or send other players back if the dice landed on Bullet Bill if you decided not to take cover. Some boards will also be shorter for those who have less time to play while they are on the go.

New Super Luigi U

 

This is the first DLC for New Super Mario Bros U starring Luigi himself. Gameplay has changed to take advantage of Luigi’s superior jumping abilities. The timer has changed to 100 seconds in order to add more replay value to each stage. This is coming sometime this Summer.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

 

The very loved Wii platformer has been ported over to the 3DS. The game has 2 modes, one that plays exactly like the Wii version called Original Mode and one for those who play shorter amount of time while they are on the go called New Mode In New Mode players have more health, more helpful items like a portable DK barrel which can summon Diddy Kong at any time, a green balloon to lift you up in case you fall down, and a cresh guard to be able to take more hits when riding the mine cart.  This mode is to help those who are new to the Donkey Kong franchise and those who found the Wii version to be too hard. This game is scheduled to be released May 24, 2013.

Yoshi’s Island 3DS

 

One of the nicest surprises today was the announcement of a third game in the Yoshi’s Island franchise. The game will play exactly like before with new features to make use of the 3DS system. No release date as of yet, we are most likely going to hear more about it during E3.

Wii U’s Spring Firmware Update

This is the first of two updates to decrease the loading times to return to the Wii U menu being released next week. It will also allow you to copy and move save data between  2 USB drives, allow software to finish installing while playing games, automatically downloading software updates, being able to go straight to the Wii Mode by pressing the B button during startup, and allow the ability to download and install software while the system is turned off.

Wii U Virtual Console

The Virtual Console service is also coming next week. It will allow you to be able to transfer your Wii VC games to the Wii U at a price.

Pikmin 3

 

New Pikmin type was revealed today called Winged Pikmin. It has the ability to fly proving to be helpful in tasks that the other Pikmin can’t do. The game is coming out August 4, 2013.

 

Earthbound

 

The biggest surprise today was the announcement that Earthbound is coming to the Wii U’s Virtual Console sometime this year. After many years of waiting, Nintendo has finally responded to all the Earthbound fans’ requests!

 

Game & Wario

 

We got a new Teaser of the upcoming Game & Wario which is coming June 23, 2013. During the Nintendo Direct video the showed off one mini-games called Pirates where you have to  avoid being hit by the Pirate ships by moving the controller around in rhythm.  The other was called Gamer which is something that I think we can call relate to. In the mini-game you have to avoid being seen playing video games by your mother who wants you to go to bed. All the games are said to play very different from one another and each uses the Gamepad in a unique way.

 

Animal Crossing 3DS XL Bundle

For those looking to upgrade or if you are looking to buy a new 3DS, Nintendo announced that they will be selling an Animal Crossing 3DS XL pre-loaded with the game for $219.99 headed to the US in June 9.

 

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy

 

Bravely Default is headed for US next year for the 3DS. This is the RPG that many American 3DS owners have been wanting after being well received over in Japan.

 

Professor Layton and Azran Legacy

 

Another game coming next year is the latest installment in the Professor Layton franchise.

 

Guild02: Bugs vs Ants, Attack of the Friday Monsters: A Tokyo Tale, The Starship Damrey

 

Guild02 is a compilation of different video games made with the cooperation various game designers. The games are all being released on the 3DS’ eShop.

Shin Megami Tensei 4

The latest game in the Shin Megami Tensei series is coming July 4, 2013. The Special Edition will sell for $49.99 and will include a soundtrack, strategy and design book and limited edition slip case

 

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2

A very welcoming surprise was the announcement of a new Zelda game for the 3DS. This one is a brand new game set in the same world as A Link to the Past with features to make use of the 3DS system.
