All us gamers have certain idols in the gaming world that we all know, will never forget and hope to always see. Mario, Link, Master Chief, Lara Croft, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, Cloud Strife, Pacman, the black mage sprite from Final Fantasy, and more. Let’s not forget someone who hasn’t gotten some real love lately even from his parent company Capcom. Today folks… we’re talking about Megaman!
The internet has been raging for years for a new Megaman game. We want Megaman and what does Capcom do? A silly April Fools joke image to “promote” a new Megaman that will never see the light of day. We on the internet pretty much accepted this as a slap in the face. Why would Capcom do this to us? The last game he was placed in that wasn’t Smash Bros was Street Fighter x Tekkan and which one was it? The original boxart in all his… lazy couch glory?
Let’s speed forward a little bit here. As we all know, Keiji Inafune left Capcom in late 2010 in order to “start his life over” and started a new gaming company but could not retain the rights to any of his work he created while at Capcom which meant he lost Megaman. In August 2013, he launched a Kickstarter campaign for his own 2D platform shooter Mighty No.9 which also seems to share a lot of Megaman’s aspects and gameplay. How did this end? The fans loved it and in less then 48 hours we helped Inafune raise the $900,000 he needed and by the end of the campaign he raised almost $4 million. Has Capcom learned anything from this? We have no idea because they don’t seem to want to talk about it.
Back to the main point of this article, what if the Megaman IP was sold off to another company? The only other company to use Megaman has been Nintendo in Smash Bros. This is also E3 week and Nintendo has released some interesting information. Today Capcom has announced a new list of games coming to the virtual console. Of a total of 12 games in North America, 7 of them are Megaman titles, while in Europe they are getting 18 more titles, and 13 of them are Megaman games. (source)
Since July of 2012, there has been 13 megaman games to hit the 3DS Eshop, 8 more hit Wii U and 12+ more anounced today to see future release. Mega Man in his classic form joing the smash brothers fight brings the blue bomber back to true form, and gives the EShop a staggering 21 games (33 if you add the upcoming announced titles). Is it absurd to ask “what if Nintendo buys Megaman”? Is Nintendo pushing to get more Megaman games on the VC, or is Capcom just looking for a way to try to make a few bucks from the diehard fans out there?
Fast forward to Jan of 2014, there was an interview posted over on Neogaf regarding the Q3 investors meeting where they detailed a few things, one of them being how Nintendo is dipping into it’s massive cash reserves to bring in more talent and keep investors happy. Could one of them be Megaman? They won’t come out and say it, but Capcom clearly has little interest in the gaming icon anymore. What would happen if Megaman was to join the ranks in Nintendo? We welcome you with open arms little guy.
