Could This Be the ‘Taboo’ in Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes?

For those who don’t know Kojima’s new game, MGS:Ground Zeroes is “…going to be treading a lot of taboos, and a lot of mature themes that really are quite risky.” but none of us really know what these Taboo’s are.

The only thing I can think of that fits within the Metal Gear world is,child soldiers.

Young Raiden from when he was a child soldier.

For those who don’t know or remember the main character of Metal Gear Solid 2, Raiden was a child soldier. As was Frank Jeaugar during the  Mozambican War of Independence. Chico was also one , as a member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front in Peace Walker. Sniper Wolf and Olga Gurlukovich, of Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 respectively, both claimed to they were “raised on the battlefield”. However, the games did not say directly that they had been child soldiers.

In Kojima’s interview he also said “Honestly, I’m not even sure if I’ll be able to release the game. Even if I did release the game, maybe it wouldn’t sell because it’s all too much.”

This just leads me to further think that in the game you at some point may have to deal with child soldiers, you might be thinking to yourself  “How the heck did you get that from what he said?”.

To me it is simple, among all the taboos in games and media there is only one that is constant and you wont find it in many places, if at all (it is rare) and that is child soldiers. The idea behind child soldiers is a dark and mature thing that many people and historians ignore, but it is something that has been prominent throughout history  and has been in Metal Gear before but non-directly.

What further made me think of this  was the fact that in the release footage of Metal Gear Ground Zeroes  you will see is a child caged out in military camp. The child in the cage is seemingly Chico,Which is important due to his relationship with ‘Big Boss’.

Caged robot boy.
Caged robot boy.

If you remember the military state of Zanzibar Land was inhabited by many children who had been “saved” from various wars and conflicts these children were saved by Big Boss. Though Big Boss did not  deploy the children as soldiers, he did intend  to train these children to fight in future wars once they were of age.

Now for the thing that really staples down my theory.

Despite children participating in warfare being very important to the games’ casts and story no faction in the Metal Gear series actively employs child soldiers within  the games, this is most likely attributed to The  International video game ratings standards objections. Several of factions in the Metal Gear world have used child soldiers through the series but this is all attributed to them being proxies or puppets of the Patriots and The Philosophers.

Furthermore to supports my thoughts that child soldiers were being omitted due to rating reason is that the entry for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake in the “Previous Operations” section of Metal Gear Solid and Twin Snakes  omitted any reference to the child soldiers in Zanzibar Land children despite them having been there.

While this is all speculation this is the only likely thing I can see the ‘Taboo’ being. What are your thoughts on the matter?
